VIOFO A119S is an extremely covert, forward facing car dashboard camera with highly powerful IMX291 image sensor from Sony and 96660 chipset from Novatek. It’s an upgraded version of the popular A119 dash cam, offering much better video recording, especially in low-light conditions. It features a special, super sensitive sensor to reduce motion blur during night time, giving it exceptional recording capability even when there is less light on the road. Compared to its predecessor, it now gets a better sensor that not only adds to the footage quality but also adds more information to the footage.
The unit turns on and off automatically along with the ignition of your vehicle and the G-sensor automatically detects abnormal motion to lock the footage of the event. With built-in microphone and speaker, it records full HD videos at a resolution of 1080 pixels at 60 fps. The 135 degrees wide angle lens gives it a good amount of flexibility to cover both sides of the road without losing focus. You can clearly see the street signs and vehicle license plates in the recording.
Compared to the storage capacity of 64 GB of A119 dash cam, the A119S version supports MicroSD card of up to 128 GB. The loop recording feature ensures that the unit does not stop recording when there is no more space left in the memory; it automatically starts writing over the old recorded files. It’s recommended that you use either Transcend or Lexar MicroSD card only for better compatibility. Using other cards may throw up a memory error, especially while recording at 1080 pixels at 60 fps. Avoid using red/grey cards from Sandisk; they often go into read only mode over long usage.
Since this is a discreet, compactly designed model, the display screen is not very big; it’s a 2 inch piece of LCD which is good enough for instant viewing. But if you want to play the recording more comfortably, you should connect the unit to an external device or use a card reader. You may want to download their DashCamViewer app for MAC and Windows. If you are playing the video on an iPhone or iPad, there is no special app required for that; just see to it that the card reader is compatible. Note that VIOFO A119S does not support any Bluetooth, WiFi or any other wireless connectivity.
You can install the unit using the accompanying 3M adhesive tape and mounting clips. You don’t get a suction mount to take it off as and when you desire; so you better decide the location before you stick the camera. The best place of course is behind the rear view mirror but if you already have it occupied with something else, like for instance, lane keeping system, then place the camera somewhere close to it so that it’s at the center of the windscreen.
After fixing the camera, insert the memory card and plug in to the USB cigarette lighter, and you are done. You don’t need to worry much about the settings; the default ones are good to go. If you are going for the optional GPS logger (which of course is a good idea), don’t forget to enable it in the settings. The GPS module will log the speed and location of your vehicle and will also synchronize date and time with the satellite. Many people like the GPS addon because it has a car adapter port in it that faces upwards, making it easier to hid the wire in your car liner, whereas without the GPS unit, the wire plugs in the bottom of the A119S cam. The GPS unit also allows you to quickly detach the camera without having to unplug a wire each time.
A119S is a capacitor based dash cam and hence offers a better range of operating temperature. Its incredible low-light video quality makes it a must-buy for night time users. You may also want to buy the optional A11 Circular Polarizing Lens (CPL) filter which would reduce glare while driving in the sun.
